PROJECT OVERVIEW

Developing Complex IT Expertise into a German IT Whitepaper

The project involved developing an eight-page German IT whitepaper around a complex enterprise technology subject. The editorial task was to define a clear perspective, select the information that supported it and develop a structure that made the relevant technical relationships understandable.

The whitepaper focused on SAP S/4HANA transformation preparation and the existing SAP landscape as its starting point.

Over time, business processes evolve, functions are extended, systems become connected and data structures change. The resulting environment can contain custom developments, integrations, process variants and dependencies that need to be considered in relation to one another.

Rather than presenting custom code, integrations, data and business processes as separate technical topics, the content was structured around one central question:

What needs to be understood about the existing system landscape before transformation planning can become more specific?

Content strategy, original German copy, information architecture, visual concept and editorial design were developed as one connected communication system.

The result is a German IT whitepaper that turns specialist enterprise technology knowledge into a focused technical narrative.

PROJECT SCOPE

Connecting Technical Content, Information Structure and Editorial Design

The project combined original German content development with the complete editorial and visual concept for the whitepaper.

Content Strategy

The broad transformation subject was narrowed to a clear editorial perspective: the existing system landscape and the characteristics that shape further preparation. This focus determined which technical aspects were included, how they were weighted and how the overall argument developed.

Original German Content

The whitepaper was developed directly in German around the technical subject, communication objective and information readers need to understand the central argument. Specialist detail, terminology and explanatory depth were shaped for a professional B2B technology audience.

Information Architecture

The content was structured from the overall landscape through key areas of analysis to relationships, action fields and preparation priorities. Each section builds on the previous one so that technical connections become progressively clearer throughout the whitepaper.

Editorial & Visual Design

Typography, page hierarchy, text distribution and visual pacing were developed together with page-specific imagery. Visual compositions reflect systems, dependencies and relationships while maintaining a consistent editorial language across the complete document.

THE COMMUNICATION CHALLENGE

Turning Technical Complexity into a Clear Editorial Perspective

The whitepaper topic brought together several interconnected areas of an enterprise technology environment.

Custom developments can support important business functions. Integrations connect applications and data flows. Processes can extend across several systems, while data, extensions and technical dependencies influence one another.

The communication challenge was to select, structure and connect these technical relationships within one clear narrative while maintaining the specialist depth required for a B2B technology whitepaper.

Three editorial questions shaped the structure:

  • Which aspects of the existing landscape are essential to the whitepaper’s central perspective?
  • How can custom code, integrations, data and processes be connected rather than presented as separate technical topics?
  • How should the narrative progress from understanding the existing landscape to the areas relevant for further preparation?

These questions established the editorial framework for selecting technical information, connecting related topics and building a clear progression through the whitepaper.

EDITORIAL APPROACH

Structuring the Whitepaper as One Progressive Narrative

The existing system landscape provides the structural framework for the whitepaper.

The narrative develops through a clear sequence:

Existing landscape → relevant characteristics → relationships and dependencies → action fields → preparation priorities

Three editorial decisions shaped this progression.

01 Defining the Editorial Focus

SAP S/4HANA transformation covers a broad range of technical, organisational and strategic questions. The whitepaper therefore focuses specifically on the situation before detailed transformation planning: understanding the existing landscape and the characteristics that influence the starting point.

This created a clear framework for selecting and weighting the information throughout the document.

02 Connecting Technical Topics

Custom code, integrations, data and processes are treated as related parts of the existing system landscape.

The Custom Code section structures the topic around four questions:

  • Which individual extensions and custom developments exist?
  • Which business or technical function do they perform?
  • Which extensions are actually used and where are they relevant?
  • Which processes, data, applications or systems are connected to them?

The following sections extend this perspective to integrations, data and processes, making the relationships between individual areas increasingly visible.

03 Moving from Analysis to Preparation

The final sections shift the perspective from understanding the existing landscape towards areas that can become priorities for deeper analysis and further preparation.

Prioritised action fields provide the transition from technical relationships to the next stage of transformation preparation.

This creates a clear progression from orientation through analysis to preparation.

EDITORIAL & VISUAL DESIGN

Translating the Technical Narrative into a Coherent Editorial System

The editorial and visual concept was developed around the technical logic and narrative structure of the whitepaper.

Dark modular forms represent systems, components and structures within the existing environment. Their composition changes with the subject of each page, from interconnected system environments and extensions to dependencies, grouped areas of analysis and preparation priorities.

Warm metallic highlights establish continuity across the document and give the technical subject a distinctive editorial identity. Soft neutral surfaces and flowing forms balance the darker modular elements and give the text and page-specific visuals room within the composition.

Editorial serif headlines, clear sans-serif body copy, generous white space and large page-specific visuals establish the design framework. Short supporting statements condense the significance of individual sections without repeating the body copy.

Content hierarchy and page composition were developed together. The four numbered questions on the Custom Code page introduce a more analytical page rhythm, while the central composition linking processes, data, extensions and applications condenses several relationships into one view. The later pages use clearer, more ordered compositions as the content moves towards prioritisation and preparation.

The result is a coherent editorial system in which each visual supports the specific subject of its page while remaining part of one recognisable design language.

PROJECT OUTCOME

A Structured German IT Whitepaper for Enterprise Technology

The completed eight-page German IT whitepaper turns specialist enterprise technology knowledge into a clear technical narrative and coherent editorial system.

The content moves from the existing system landscape and its dependencies towards the areas relevant for further transformation preparation.

Content strategy, technical B2B writing, information architecture, visual concept development and editorial design work together to create original German content with a clear editorial focus, consistent structure and distinctive visual language.
